Shivapuri Hill

Shivapuri Temple

Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park: Is in the northern and north western part of Kathmandu. The Shivapuri Hill is the one of the most important watershed area of the Kathmandu valley and provides most of the valley’s water needs. For hiking enthusiasts who want to travel in Nepal and cannot go out of the valley for longer treks, this area is an ideal location for a half day to one day hiking.

Hikers could start the day by paying a visit to Budhanilkantha Temple, Narayanstan where a sleeping statue of Vishnu is located in a pond. You could take a direct bus to Narayansthan from Kalanki, Kotheshwor and Ratnapark. There is regular worshipping (offering flowers by chanting prayers) at the temple in the morning and at some occasion there are special worshipping going on in the temple.

Now, hikers should decide for how long they want to hike. If they want to hike for around three hours, then they could start from the Tokha hill, beyond Bishnumati River and walk on the dirt road that passes through the upper sections of the hill. Foreigners should pay Rs. 250 (around 4 US dollars) as an entry fee and citizens from SAARC countries should pay Rs 50 and Nepalese nationals need to pay Rs. 10. This road is not used for public purposes so you will not be bothered by vehicles on this part apart from some of the vehicles of the army personnel who are stationed to protect the park. After hiking for around three hours, hikers will reach a turnoff to Muhan Pokhari. Hikers who are tired should head down towards Muhan Pokhari and others wishing to continue further should take the straight road.

Hikers who want to see a Buddhist Shrine in the Shivapuri Hill near Tarebhir village should continue for around an hour along the dirt road. From the turn off to Muhan Pokhari, you might encounter quite some vehicles most of them heading towards the shrine. You will find a plastered stairway which will lead you to the shrine. The shrine has a serene environment and it provides a good panoramic view of the Kathmandu valley. Hikers who wish to return should trace back their steps towards Muhan Pokhari.

Hikers wishing to continue further should be prepared to walk for another 3 hours on a solitary trail in the middle of the jungle. Travelers will encounter a village of Tarebhir after hiking for around half an hour from the Gompa. From here onwards, you will be on your own and the road is straight forward – no turnoff until you reach a bridge above the source of the Bagmati River, which is at a crossroad. The eastward road will lead you towards Chisapani – around 4 hours of walk from there. Take the stairs and head downwards. On the way, you will see a dam controlling the river flow and a small reservoir. This is one of the water projects for the Kathmandu valley. Head downwards until you reach Sundarijal. From there take a bus to your destination.

Hikers could do the reverse of this hike and start from Sundarijal (you could get in a bus from Ratnapark or from other locations ride upto Jorpati and take a bus from there) and end in Muhan Pokhari or in Tokha hill, beyond Bishnumati River.
